Everything about PCSJ Exam

Judge- is the most desired and aspired designation of every law graduate. For every person who is interested in works related to public welfare, the judiciary may prove a worthwhile option for them. Not only is it a way to remain closely connected with the law throughout your professional life, but also one that offers the satisfaction of working for the good of society- an intellectually stimulating profession where you shall command the respect of the common man. But needless to say, every precious and desired goal can only be achieved through utter sweat and blood and with a proper plan and its successful execution. Same principle works in case of Judicial Services Examination too. Hence, let us have a detailed look at its pattern and examination rules.

PCS-J stands for Provincial Civil Service- Judicial Examination. It is basically an entry-level exam for law graduates to get appointed as a member of the subordinate judiciary. Judicial Service (PCS-J) exams are conducted at State level. Each of these State Judicial Services conducts their own recruitment, usually through examinations and interviews. The patterns and exam processes for each state is different. In this Article, I will be talking and briefing about the exam pattern of Uttar Pradesh State.

Uttar Pradesh Judiciary Exam’s selection process consists of mainly 3 stages:-

1. Prelims

2. Mains

3. Interview

All these three stages are qualifying in nature.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Minimum Age- 22 years
  2. Maximum Age- 35 years
  3. There is a separate age relaxation policy for scheduled castes and tribes
  4. The candidate must hold a completed bachelor degree of law from any recognized university of Uttar Pradesh
  5. He must be an enrolled advocate under the provisions of the Advocate Act, 1961
  6. He must be a citizen of India
  7. Must not be a criminal offender
  8. Proficient in Devnagari Script of Hindi Language

Pay-Scale:

The minimum basic salary of a high court civil judge begins from Rs. 26,000 and on an average, he draws a salary of Rs. 80,000 per month including allowances and perks. The salary scale also depends on the years of experience, the person has.

UPPSC PCS J Prelims Exam Pattern:

The prelims examination serves as a screening for mains exam. It comprises objective type questions. The marks secured in the preliminary examination are not counted for the final selection. The percentages of qualifying marks vary as per state. The minimum qualifying marks in the preliminary examination is 60% for general and 55% for reserved categories.

UPPSC PCS J Interview Pattern:

The interview will be of 100 marks. The suitability of candidates for employment in the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Services will be tested with reference to his meritorious capability and his aptitude knowledge in addition to his overall personality.

Tips for Moot Court Competition

Moot court competitions are one of the most enjoyable aspects of law school extracurricular activities. The concept of moot court competitions is straightforward: they are intended to simulate a court hearing. Through moot courts, the law school provides students with a taste of what it is like to be in a courtroom. Even though it is a requirement in the final year, most law schools hold inter and intramoot court competitions throughout the year to help students improve their mooting skills.  The student usually receives a factsheet, which provides a brief understanding of the dispute in question between two or more parties who are assigned to either the Plaintiff or Defendant’s side of the dispute. The fact sheet is usually provided to the students.   These teams are tasked with creating a fact sheet that includes two speakers and a couple of researchers, among other things. Within the time limit, the students must conduct research into their cases, develop arguments, and prepare responses to the dispute in the form of petitions and affidavits in opposition. Then, on the big day, the participants must defend their positions in front of a panel of judges, who will score them based on a variety of factors including their overall performance. It could be anything from researching to drafting to making an oral presentation.   Let us talk about how to prepare for moot court presentations in greater detail.  Understand the laws that apply to you.  As a law student, you must be familiar with the relevant statutes. You are not permitted to enter the moot court without having completed any prior research or preparation. As a result, you should always begin with the facts of your case. If you’ve been given any sample briefs, make sure to read them thoroughly.  The goal is to:   state the most persuasive arguments for your side;   clarify any points that were not made clear in the written material;   address any weaknesses in your case;   and be familiar with the counterarguments to your opponent’s arguments.  Recognize the relevant facts of the situation.  Each and every page of the case should be familiar and understandable to you. At all times during the debate, you should present yourself as the expert on the facts and be able to answer any questions from the panel.   Consider taking your time when framing your arguments.  Keep in mind that your arguments should be natural and organic in nature. Your oral submissions will be judged on how well you frame your arguments. It must be constructed with a great deal of patience and consideration.  …
