The influence of peer pressure on criminal Behavior (part-1)

There are many small groups or communities exist in larger society and the members of these groups violate the norms, rules and regulations of the society. Hence, Criminal behaviour often times represents a collective response that is directed by sub cultural values and norms of distinct collectivises such as peer groups within the larger group. Individuals normally have friends in the society or any closest friend among their peers. Therefore peers associates have a great influence on the lifestyle of the members. Peer relations have long been central for the study of delinquency and for good reason. Teenagers spend a lot of time with their mates, attach great importance to them, and are more strongly influenced by them during this period than at any other time.

Through puberty, peers are primary role models, and teenagers are particularly vulnerable to peer dynamics. Therefore, it is not shocking that one of the most reliable and established results in criminology research are that teenagers with delinquent peers are more likely to be delinquents/criminals themselves. This finding dates back to the 1930s that more than 80% of juveniles appearing before court had peer accomplice. Adolescent criminal activities and delinquency have received substantial recognition as a pressing social problem since they are known to have short- and long-term consequences at the individual level. Recent studies have found that peer delinquency’s association with self-report delinquency is more significant than any other independent variable, irrespective of whether the emphasis is on status violations, minor property crimes, abuse crimes, or substance usage.

There are a variety of negative health indicators that show a peek during adolescence, namely homicide rates, non-intentional injuries, driving under alcohol effect or infection by sexually-transmitted diseases.  Experimenting substances also occurs usually during adolescents, a time of development in which tolerance is lower and the risk of dependency increases. Peers and family play a key role in fostering wellbeing in adolescence, as well as the understanding of the quality of life and subjective well-being of young people. Health does not depend solely on the provision of health care during illness; on the contrary, it may be necessary to control different settings. Peer pressure is not something we take casually in modern world. Adolescents do everything to fit in and if they do not fit in the group because of their lifestyle, family problems, attire, clothes etc they become a victim of bullying. This is the factor which led to influence adolescents to do crime. The risk from delinquent friends of friends and delinquent foes of friends is especially high if an individual’s own friend is the perpetrator of a crime, because delinquent friends may not act as capable guardians willing to intervene – the reasoning being that many offenders pursue their own self-interest and are less likely to sacrifice or accept risks on behalf of

Others. So, whereas conventional friends may act as capable. There are many theories which are given to us by scholars on criminal behaviour and how peer pressure influence criminal behaviour and to what extent adolescents be influenced because of this. Peer groups or associations have their own cultures, sanctions or rituals into which members are socialized and accordingly, members (especially new members) who do not comply with any of these may be ostracized. Peer pressure extends to all groups.  A  peer  group  refers  to  persons  that  belong  to  the  same  age  (or about the same age) and/or status.

Examples of peer groups include, age peer group, school or educational peer group, social peer group, professional peer group and work peer group guardians, effectively protecting individuals from victimization, this may be less true for delinquent friends. Not only are friends who interact on a daily basis or who are closely attached to each other more likely to serve as an example, transmit values, and reinforce each other’s behaviour, they are also more likely to meet the friends and foes of their

Friends.
