Population growth refers to change in the size of a population which can be either positive or negative over time, depending on the balance of births and deaths. If there are many deaths, the world’s population will grow very slowly or can even decline. Population growth is measured in both absolute and relative terms.
High population is a cause of concern in many countries. The higher the population the more is the shortage of resources for the people. India is the second country with the largest population after China. Being a third world country India has severe population crisis in front of it.
The term population explosion refers to the phenomenon of a rapid increase in population which tends to outstrip the growth of national income and retards the progress in per capita income.
It is indicative of a situation where the economy is not capable of coping with the needs to save and invest enough for rapid accumulation necessary for the achievement of a take off stage. The economy, therefore, remains in the grip up of a vicious circle of poverty.
The superstitious people mainly from rural places think that having a male child would give them prosperity and so there is a considerable pressure on the parents to produce children till a male child is born. This leads to a population explosion.
One of the major reasons why India has an ever-increasing population is that the literacy rate in India is much lower than its actual potential. Illiteracy makes people go in for than one child with the notion that each child will eventually contribute to the income of the family.
The other main reason behind population growth is the decrease in mortality rate due to the advancement in science and technology. People are living a longer live compared to the past when the mortality rate was high.
Another concerning reason is migration. Migrants from neighboring regions like Nepal and Bangladesh flock to India to escape atrocities they face in their home land and also for better employment opportunities.
It’s ironic situation because increased population means lesser employment. The governments have not been successful in creating sufficient opportunities for everyone. Not only employment but also basic facilities like infrastructure and health get neglected. Most of the rural population are yet to get access to education, health care and sustainable employment. Family planning, welfare programs, and policies have not fetched the desired result. The increase in population is putting tremendous pressure on the limited infrastructure and negating India’s progress.
While the population is growing at a rapidly it is also using the countries natural resources and they are depleting at a rapid pace. At a time when the world is facing global warming and talking about sustainable development goals. A country that has a large population will need to take extra efforts from their end to ensure pollution levels are low and there is effective consumption of natural resources.
The government and various NGOs should raise awareness about family planning and welfare. Hoardings with slogans like “Hum do, humare do” and “Chota Parivar, Sukhi Parivar” should be put up in hospitals and other public places. These slogans mean that a small family is a happy family and two children for two parents. The awareness about the use of contraceptive pills and family planning methods should be generated.
India’s strength in the global world in various fields cannot be ignored. By raising public awareness and enlisting strict population control norms India will be able to control its growing population.
