POVERTY IN INDIA

“Poverty is the worst form of violence”

Mahatma Gandhi

India is the seventh largest country by area and has the most populous democracy in the whole world. India is the second largest populated country of the world. India is a country which is famous for its ancient history, varied landscapes and diverse culture.

India is a country which is rich in many ways whether we talk about it in a geographical manner or in a demographic manner. India has always been a country which holds a special place in the world. The game of chess was invented in India, yoga originated in India, India is the origin of Ayurveda,  India is the largest producer of spices in the whole world.

These are the medals that our country owns and we all can say very proudly that yes we belong to India.  But when we talk about the milestones of our country then we must also keep in our mind that this is the partial reality of our country. There is another reality too which forces us to think that at this point of time also when the world has changed so much and everything is so innovative and techno effective still we face issues like poverty, unemployment, child labour, etc in our country.

Today let’s talk about poverty and according to me it is the root cause of every issue that I mentioned above.

Poverty has many faces and it just can’t be described in some words or phrases. In a simple layman language poverty means not having enough money to fulfill even the basic needs of life. When a person is not able to earn enough to feed himself or his family, when he is not able to reach to a doctor when he is sick, when he can’t afford basic education for his children, when he is not able to afford food shelter and clothing, when he is not able to compete with the society and when he is not able to sleep peacefully due to such reasons then in real sense this is how poverty actually looks like. Even after imagining what poverty looks like we get goosebumps about how these people even survive.

Two-thirds of people in India live in poverty and this is something to which we should draw our attention to. Government of our country should focus more on the schemes or programmes that uplift the poor section of the society. Government should work more to help these poor people in one or another way and not only the government, in fact the people of the country who have the ability to help these people in any way should help them whether it is in monetary terms or something else. The government of country has already launched a lot of schemes for the poor section of the society like- Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP), Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaaz Yojana, etc which helps to uplift the poor sections of the society. There are many NGOs also who are constantly working day and night so they can at least contribute a little to reduce poverty in India.

It is really very important to reduce poverty in India because if poverty remains like this then it will create more problems and it is continuously growing. If the people of the country are poor then the country cant function properly like the illiteracy rate of the country will increase, there will be high infant mortality rate, child labour will increase and many more. So as a responsible citizen of the country everyone should come forward and help the poor section of the society to grow, in their own ways in which they are capable of, this will directly or indirectly help the government to work more effectively and efficiently for these people.
