Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narender Modi in which handed over LPG connections to women beneficiaries takes place. This scheme was first launched in 2016 titled as Pradhan Mantri Ujjwla Yojana 1.0 whose aim was to offer LPG connections to 5 crore women from below poverty lines homes to reduce indoor pollution in rural areas. After that in 2018, the scheme was expanded to cover women from seven additional groups (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most backward classes, tea garden, forest dwellers and islands).
In 2021, Prime Minister Narender Modi launched Pradhan Mandri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 in which several modifications and additions were created with respect to 1.0 Ujjwala Yojana. In this, LPG connections were handed to women beneficiaries in Mahoba on 10th august 2021. PM Narender Modi also virtually interacted with some of the beneficiaries of the ujjwala yojana. And total of 1000 women were given benefit of ujjawala yojana during the video conferencing event And talked to beneficiaries of the ujjwala from different states like uttrakhand, goa, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and various other state. He asked them about their experiences prior to getting the LPC connections like how they used to cook food before the availability of LPG, they depend on biomas like burning of wood, cow dung etc. which led to increase in indoor pollution causes respiratory diseases and affected lungs. Uttar Pradesh CM yogi adityanath also attended the event and physically on the benefits to 10 women. So Ujjwala 2.O aims to provide clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, to rural households. In this year’s union budget (2021-2022) an additional one crore LPG connections under the scheme has been announced. These connections aim to provide deposit-free LPG connections to low income families who could not be covered under the previous phase of the scheme.
Why was Ujjwala Yojana needed?
In india, indoor pollution is the second biggest killer after blood pressur. According to census 2011, nearly 121 million households used traditional stoves that trapped them in a highly polluted environment. In 2010, indoor air pollution caused two premature deaths every minute and dirty cooking fuels is one of the big contributor that pollution. So by this scheme, and by providing LPG in the rural areas, we can decrease the number of deaths which are caused due to this pollution and moreover this scheme also help the poor families economically.
Benefits of Ujjwala 2.0
Ujjwala 2.0 will provide the first refill and hotplate free of cost to the beneficiaries. And now its enrolment procedure will require minimal paper work and migrants will not be required to submit ration cards or any address proof. Self declaration by the person is sufficient to take the benefit of this scheme. Therefore we can say, it gives asy access to LPG to poor or rural households.
Beneficiaries of this scheme
PMUY beneficiaries are identified through socio economic caste census list 2011 and in case if names are not covered under SECC list, then beneficiaries are identified from seven categories which are as follows:
- All SC/STs households beneficiaries of pradhan mantra awas yojana (PMAY) (Gramin).
- Antyoday anna yojana (AAY)
- Forest dwellers
- Most backward classes
- Tea and ex-tea garden tribes
- People residing in islands
- People residing in river islands
So this scheme is for the welfare of the rural people because upliftment of rural and poor people is also a necessary step that should be taken by government, for the economic development of the country at international level.
