It’s always said, World War 3 can occur in 2 ways i.e., first being nuclear war and the second being race in the world of technology. Now in 21st century, the arise and movement caused by technologies, internet and media is overbearing and huge. Therefore in this era, our identity is at stake that being security and safety of our personal. The personal information is used everywhere be it in the health sector, online social networking sites, educational etc., everything is digitalized and available for accessing.
There is a run for power, be it army, information technologies, health advancements, educational achievements, etc. Therefore, the privacy and data protection is at question. Not many people in India even read the terms and conditions provided in digital applications and just merely accept, trusting it. And therefore providing access to the application provider to go through gallery, location or any other permission accepted. Now even school going kids have mobile phones, tablets or any digital appliances just at demand, making them highly dependent on the technology, thus knowledge, information and leisure at fingertips.
This gives rise to cyber crimes. Stealing of data, cyber extortion, Identity theft, Credit card frauds, hacking the personal data from the computer, phishing, illegal downloading, Industrial espionage money, instances of destroyed privacy, security, etc. Can be considered as instances of cyber crimes. “The rate at which the cyber related issues are occurring is concerning and scary, to which our own privacy and security is affected and hampered. As per the statistics report, it has been provided that in the year of 2017, India had 331.77 million internet users. This figure is projected to grow to 511.89 million internet or more users in the end of 2022.”
Seeing this increase of risks, various statutes and laws are implemented. The Information Technology act 2000(purpose-creating a safe and good commercial use of IT), the Indian Penal Code,1860(also has various statutes to control the privacy related), in the month of April, MEITY was established to control and curb availability of child sexual abuse material over internet. The constitution of India also provides the right to privacy, no longer a fundamental right but a constitutional right. And there are many more statutes available.
But it’s not enough, the resources are not enough to control and create fear among people for the risks for committing the crimes related to data or internet or information technology. India needs to have a detailed statute mainly covering the aspect, and ways to reduce the aforesaid crimes, therefore the purpose being, there should be no loopholes to cyber crimes and if someone tends to commit still, should be penalized, punished or granted fine, because these crimes/frauds effects mental and physical health too. The rise in use of technology, gives opportunities to create new and developed societal wrongs.
Therefore farsightedness is required and a proper and rigid law/ statute to create control over the situation. Furthermore, using the policies change of various countries, applications, the authorities tend to create control over complaints and public outrage over the issues faced in India in general. So, the solution can be seen as, a rigid outlook and nobody being superior to the laws or an exception.
Crimes will increase, depending upon the population, poverty, etc., But the measures taken to control it by the government on the concerned bodies will make the society a better place to survive and for the overall development without the sheer breach of privacy.
