REEL REALITY

INTRODUCTION

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced learning to move into the online space. Learners have been denied the real-world touch-and-feel experience of learning in a face-to-face mode from wise facilitators, and the enjoyment of the classroom experience with real life peers. Even before Covid-19, there was already a high growth and adoption in education technology.

Now, there is a need, more than ever before, to build real life simulation in online learning using tools of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and extended (XR) in order to enhance the learning experience of students in these trying times.

Virtual Reality (VR) refers to a computer-generated simulation in which a person can interact within an artificial three-dimensional environment using electronic devices, such as special goggles with a screen or gloves fitted sensors.

Augmented Reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real-world environment are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory and olfactory inputs. Extended Reality (XR) is an emerging umbrella term for all the immersive technologies. The ones we already have today- Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) plus those that are still to be created. All immersive technologies extend the reality we experience by either blending the virtual and ‘real’ worlds or by creating a fully immersive experience.

USES OF VIRTUAL REALITY

VR can be used to make field trips possible whether it is a foreign location or a time long gone in history. Students can be taken to various museums sitting in safety and comfort of their homes using VR.

Technological changes are accompanied by the demographic development. Changing industrial process will also change the maintenance process. Maintenance technicians will take a responsible role within production with the objective of minimizing the downtime of the system.

Theoretical and practical teaching of science subjects like the Human Anatomy can be blended using VR and AR. Certain uses of VR like virtual campus tours are here to stay even after the pandemic comes to an end. It is an effective and zero cost way of experiencing various university campuses before deciding where to take admission.

During pandemic, researchers are using innovative and efficient technologies for fast tracking development of the institutions to end this threatening scenario. VR has been able to benefit for remote sites exploration, planning and treatment.

While some believe that the unplanned and growth of online learning will result in poor experience for sustainable growth and development, others believe that it is a new hybrid model of education and will emerge significant benefits.

CONCLUSION

Future work will focus on the visualization of experiential knowledge. As experiential knowledge is mainly tacit knowledge, narrative methods for its investigation, as described in the paper at hand, need to be developed and applied. They can be improved by using VR-based applications that allow the documentation of stories already within the interview process and can keep the narrative structure. This ensures a better transfer process.

To sum up everything, it was believed that virtual reality would damage our brain, but these days it has proven to help our gray matter. A new wave of mental illness caused during the pandemic were treated through remote diagnosis. VR has helped to create a safe, controlled environment inside a VR headset which is less time consuming and less expensive option.

I have always been against Glorifying Over Work and therefore, in the year 2021, I have decided to launch this campaign “Balancing Life”and talk about this wrong practice, that we have been following since last few years. I will be talking to and interviewing around 1 lakh people in the coming 2021 and publish their interview regarding their opinion on glamourising Over Work.
