Religion is increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives as the twenty first century surges on but is it really moving forward as we do! Or are we still stuck in the Stone Age restricted by religious shackles snatching our freedom away from us, when we speak of freedom we cannot forget the legendary quote by martin Luther king Jr.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. (Martin Luther king junior, 1963)

Perhaps everyone has read these lines in high school, but how many of us have actually understood the meaning of it, or the reasoning behind it, why did the late martin Luther king Jr. wrote it, what was his motive behind it, perhaps not. Well i did, and i found out that he was in a jail in Birmingham at that time, he was protesting racial injustice. But we should try to understand his words in today’s context, which is religion, now the question arises, how religion is related to today’s context. Well it is, because all that is happening in this world right now is somehow directly or indirectly related to religion. Be it the beheading of a teacher in France or the never ending war in the Middle East.

But how does all this connect to martin Luther king junior, it does because if we consider the logic behind his statement if we may assume that evil anywhere is a threat to virtuousness everywhere, and religion is increasingly becoming an excuse for performing evil activities like, killing innocent people, propagating hatred and that’s not even the worst part, the worst part is people are blatantly supporting this mayhem citing religious sentiments. What are these religious sentiments and why do these people give priority to religious sentiments over life. These religious apologists argue that speaking against certain set of belief is hurtful and bigoted and then they justify the extremism like former president of the United States of America, Donald Trump did when he justified the shooting of black lives matter protesters by some White Supremacists, he tweeted, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”.

Every religion has the same mindset towards extremism, they all run the same propaganda, which is indirectly supporting extremism by saying speaking against their religion is unjustified. This is not right, well the people supporting them are right (wing) but this thought process is not correct. This is leading us towards anarchy, a world without freedom. Thus to conclude it can said that “religion anywhere is a threat to humanity everywhere”.
