Years of India’s independence, and we are yet to achieve the goal of equality among Indians, slowly the goal is becoming a dream. It adequately tells the story of what is wrong with this country and its structure of providing education and employment. some questions come to our mind like why reservation is needed? How had such a protective scheme not yet reached its objective? Reservation means an act of withholding, reserving, or keeping some of the seats for the upliftment of the status of living socially and educationally backward classes or groups.
For a country that is limited and lacking in public resources despite being one of the largest democracies in the world, reservations have some important social, economic, and political implications. From the day caste-based reservation in India, there has been confusion among groups, which may have increased due to the expansion of reservation policy over the past few decades, which now includes backward classes as well. Despite reservations continuing for more than six decades, discrimination against Dalits is still a part of everyday life. there is a significant need to amend and reform the reservation policy in India based on dynamic needs.
The reservation also becomes a tool of political weapon which was used by politicians to influence votes in their favour. reservation instead of creating a sense of unity among different sections of society led to further divergence due to agenda of some political colour. using rhetoric and projecting false benefits through reservation politicians have long fooled the person of this country with their lofty promises that have widened the gap between us. The problem is not with the policy but with the way it was introduced. people must understand that the reservation policy is only for a temporary time frame until equality reigns among all grounds of discrimination.
Over time reservation was coined as the right of backward communities but awareness should be created among all people that reservation is a tool to achieve justice and cab be removed once the goal of equality is achieved. The goal is not the continuation of reservation which shows that the country has not risen from the imbalance of social status but to present to the new world that all Indians stand on equal footing without any privileges. Their many stances of Indian legislature and judiciary i.e Article 15 of the Indian constitution is concerned with the prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of religion race.
Article 14 embodies the general principle of equality before the law. There is a long judicial history that is related to the issue of reservation. The major case is Nain Sukh v. state of Madhya Pradesh and many more. Currently, as per the government policy, 15% of the government jobs and 15% of the students admitted to universities must be from scheduled caste and scheduled tribes there is a reservation of about 7.5%. other than this the state governments also follow their reservation policies respectively based upon the population constitution of each state. Nearly 50% of seats are reserved.
The root of the problem lies not in the demarcation of categories but the ever-increasing rural and urban divide and issues of migration. in a rural village in India, a general category person suffers as much as a backward class. Therefore the solution lies in bridging the gap between rural and urban India, which can be done by focussing on the rural system and providing them all the basic amenities. In this way, we can reduce the concentration of power in few hands and provides livelihood to the weaker section i.e rural society.
