Reservation is a much talked and debate issue in Indian politics as well as amongst the common man. Reservation was introduced for the first time in Government of India act 1935 in which seats were reserved for the candidates of schedule caste and schedule tribes. It was a political gimmick played by the British government to create fractions or to take advantage of the fractions between various societies of Indians.
After independence of the country when the constitution of India was written down by the drafting committee headed by DR. B R Ambedkar ,it is said in article 16 clause 4 that “Nothing in [article 16] or in clause (2) of article 29 shall prevent the State from making any special provision for the advancement of any socially, and educationally backward classes of citizens of or for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes”
Article 46 “The State shall promote with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of the people, and, in particular, of the Scheduled Castes and the Schedule Tribes, and shall protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation.”
Article 15(4) capacitates the state to create special arrangements for promoting the interests and welfare of socially and educationally backward classes of the society such as SC and STs
Such articles and some others provide provisions of reservations in India. The law of the land is local and it is amended by time to time ,as the society changes the law also changes but since reservation is a burning topic for politics and making governments the reservation is never dealt with proper understanding.
Reservation was provided to the socially and economically backward classes of that time to enhance their status in the society, but even after 75 years of independence the reservation is neither amended nor repealed. As far as education is concerned the basis of the reservation should not be on the caste system rather it should be on the basis of economic status of the individual. Nowadays It is not necessary that every SC, ST or OBC are economically backward and every person from general category is a landlord. The society has changed completely the reservation should be based on the economic efficiency of the particular individual. Also while talking about the opportunities in the government sectors or admissions in the government institutions instead of lowering the cutoff for the reserved category they should be provided with study materials and coaching by the government to fight the healthy competition.
Reservation in India has been playing a major role in the politics of India. Furthermore, it has now become an integral part of Indian society, in spite of the criticism it had to face. Overall, it can be said that while the intention behind reservation cannot be blamed, it is the faulty implementation that has been the main problem.
