Right to food is an important part of the human rights and this right cannot be denied by anyone. The government has implemented many schemes for the poor and needy people for having food in order to survive. Food is a necessity for human beings and every citizen has a right on it which can’t be denied by any one at the time of need.
Thus, the right to food is a right that ensures an individual’s basic entitlement for food; it comes under the purview of economic and social rights. As per the Article 11 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Article 25 of Indian Constitution, it is duty of every state to provide every one to have access to this citizenship responsibility .In India approximately 40% people are facing problems for the problem of hunger and lack for food security. Being a basic issue, the people should first be aware of their rights bestowed by constitution.
.The duty of govt should be stern as it is framed in Art 47 of our constitution to provide every citizen with “right to food” which has been guaranteed under the Constitution and cannot be denied to any person. The right to food is one of the basic human right enshrined in our constitution under article 21.It is a fundamental human right and India being a signatory to various International Conventions on Social and Economic Rights, it is morally bound to provide every citizen with right to food.It took the petitioners and the lawyers of PUCL to take this matter to Supreme Court and to question the faultiness of Government which has failed to provide food which is a basic necessity of life.
Supreme court then asked Standing Committee on Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs about the reason in not being able to achieve the goal for food security, and that’s how the Rajya Sabha passed a resolution saying that it will lay down a comprehensive national policy for providing food for all. Then, Prime Minister announced in his address to nation on Independence Day, “We will have a comprehensive policy on Right to Food from next year”.poverty can be eradicated by the providing proper food to the public. While food poverty is a central and most visible manifestation of material deprivation, its adverse effects are not restricted only to people who are below the poverty line.
Food poverty has its adverse effects on all citizens of a country, especially on the overall education system, which in turn affects other basic rights of people like the Right against exploitation.Right to food is a national and global issue that requires attention, compassion, coordination and resource allocation.
This fundamental right can be achieved by the concerted efforts of all actors in collaboration with one another. A network of non-governmental and non-profit organizations, as well as Governments with technical assistance from multilateral organizations such as the UN and donors, should be established to achieve this goal. There have been many strategies and approaches as to how we can eliminate hunger and poverty. Researchers suggest that food aid, international aspect and soup kitchens are some of the ways in which we can resolve the issue of hunger; however, these approaches aren’t permanent. There are other ways we can ensure the Right to Food for everyone.
