Rights and Responsibilities of a Consumer

Need for Consumer Protection Act

A consumer is any person who buys any goods or services for their personal use. In recent times, due to unfair trade practises it has become a necessity to bring a law which would protect the consumers from being cheated. Therefore, an act called the Consumer Protection Act was created which commenced in India in December 1986.

The main reason for the creation of the Consumer Protection Act is to make consumers aware of their rights and responsibilities and to save them from unfair trade practises which are being practised by the sellers.

Rights of Consumers

Every person has 4 basic consumer rights- The right to be informed, right to choose, right to safety and right to be heard. Over the years, 3 other rights were added- rights to have problems corrected, right to consumer education and the right to service.

  1. Right to be Informed

Every consumer has a right to be informed about the product which they are to purchase, or the services which they are to avail. It is the right of every consumer to be informed about the quality, quantity, price, potency, purity and standard of goods in order to protect the consumer from any kind of unfair trade practices.

  • Right to Choose

It is the right of every consumer to choose from a variety of products available in the market. The consumer should be given access to a variety of goods and services at different prices.

  • Right to Safety

Every consumer has the right to be protected against the unfair means of marketing. It is the right of every consumer to be protected against the marketing of goods and service, which are hazardous to life and property.

  • Right to be Heard

It is the right of every consumer to be heard and to be assured that consumer’s interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums.

  • Rights to have Problems Corrected

It is the right of every consumer to get their problems corrected. As per this right, if any consumer faces any issue with any goods, they have the right to get the article replaced or to be repaired.

  • Right to Consumer Education

It the right of every consumer to get educated with regards to how the market system works. The consumer should know how to get the best value and satisfaction for their money.

  • Right to Service

It is the right of every consumer to get proper service. The consumers have a right to be treated in a respectful and courteous manner. Consumers also have the right to be served without discrimination.

Responsibilities of Consumers

Consumers have various rights available with them but still ne need to be responsible with the products they buy and many other things. Therefore, there are certain responsibilities of the consumers, which are as follows:-

  • The main responsibility of every consumer is to be fully aware. The consumer needs to gather information with relation to the product they are going to buy, be aware of the changes and the innovation which are available in the market.
  • The consumer needs to be aware of the quality and safety of the products which they are going to buy.
  • The consumers must exercise their rights with utmost attention.
  • The consumer must be fully aware of the remedies they have and should not believe in false advertisements.
