Sustainable Development – Part 1

Sustainable Development Ability to make development sustainable to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.

MEANING OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The sustainable development has been derived Brundtland’s Our Common Future. 1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development. ” Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The term sustainable development was first used in the Cocoyoc Declaration on Environment and Development in the early 1970s. Since then, it has become a buzzword for international organizations dedicated to environmentally beneficial development. It basically talked about the sustainable development goals which basically talks about the conservation of the resources and using them in the most efficient manner in future. The term had served to catalyze debate over the relationship between economic change and the natural resource base in which it is grounded. There are various definitions related to this theory but the most important agenda that was adopted for the concept of sustainable development is contained in Our Common Future, 1987 which set up the guidelines for sustainable development and pointed out what needs to be done for the efficient use of the given resources and how to distribute them equally among all the sections of the society without compromising the needs of the future generation.

OBJECTIVES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The objectives of sustainable development are as follow

. Environmental friendly patterns of activity

. Energy Efficiency

. Conservation of natural and man-made resources

. Provision of buildings and areas with lasting quality and character this relates to design quality, to high standards of comfort and amenity, safety and convenience.

. Development of production opportunities.

FUNDAMENTAL IDEAS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

RENEWABILITY

The rate of utilization of renewable resources should be lower than or equal to the rate of regeneration of the resource. The resources that have already depleted due to ‘over use’ should be given complete protection.

ADAPTABILITY

A sustainable developing society has ability to adapt in changing environment. It is also capable of creating opportunities for survival and recreation through innovation, manifested in Research and Development (R and D activities).

INTERDEPENDENCE

A sustainable society neither imports resources from outside through deprivation of other communities, nor it exports its own wastes to create pollution in other societies.

SUBSTITUTION

Sustainable development ensures substitution of use of non-renewable natural resources by the use of renewable natural resources. Although, it is the extreme case sustainable development to substitute non-renewable resources completely . Complete substitution of the use of wind/solar/tidal energy is difficult to attain.

INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT

Institutional commitment includes political support, constitutional provisions, legal framework, coordination between legal institutions and above all the ability to understand the need of sustainable development in a society.

To ensure sustainable development’s achievement, proper education is needed because only informed and educated citizens will only know the deep meaning of what really is sustainable development and hence contribute efficiently in the conservation and effective use of the resources so that no resources are being wasted and all the sections of the society get equal benefit of the resources and for that each and every people of the society needs to become aware and educated with their duties and rights so that every people have the knowledge about how to conserve this natural resources and using them effectively so that there is no problem regarding full utilization of resources among all sections of society.

So overall all these fundamental ideas talks about the basic principles and guidelines which needs to be followed among the people so that the goal of sustainable development is achieved and no problem is there when people are using the resources effectively and everyone gets the same amount of resources within the society. And for that everyone must become educated and fully aware about the usage of the given resources and so no resources should be wasted and used effectively. The three R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are the most basic principle in the path of sustainable development. So the three R’s should be followed rigorously which results in the effective and conservative use of resources so that no resources are wasted and every section of the society have equal benefit from them.
