SEX RATIO GAP ‘AT BIRTH’
Societal discrimination on the terms of gender established a state of surroundings where population gap of male and female became an issue to concern over, for which timely measures to curb were adopted but proposed situation as success still was left to be a far fetch. Instances of past showcase the distinct mindset that society had rigidly settled in regards with separate human entities from which ,Females being the vulnerable part were always subjected to discrimination, comparative inferior status to males, dominance, and abandonment. The inclination of society, bluntly referred to as priority, towards male (favouritism) somewhere played its drastic part in changing the scenario for the equal existence of both of the genders.
RECENT RECORDS (2018):
The population gap in India can be perused after consideration of different categories based on records to observe the best to worst performing states for a national collective overview;
1) HEALTHY RATIO STATES: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Kerala stand as the most accountable states in terms of equal sex ratio with 1,084, 965, 965 and 963 females born per thousand males respectively in figures (approx.).
2) NEUTRAL RATIO STATES: Delhi recorded at 929 and Haryana 914 in comparative figures, holding up the possibilities of cover-up within the ongoing decade.
3) WORST RATIO STATES: Records of few of the states showcased the worst sex ratio with Manipur at 757, Lakshadweep 839, Daman & Diu 877, Punjab 896 and Gujarat at 896 which sparks the topic to argue over surely.
The determination of ratio aforementioned was based on the data provided by the respective States and UTs. Apt information from seven states namely Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh , Rajasthan and West Bengal were not adequately available.
The Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2018 shows that sex ratio at birth in India, declined marginally from 906 in 2011 to 899 in 2018.
ISSUES RELATED WITH UNEQUAL SEX RATIO AT BIRTH:
• INCREASED LITERACY RATE– The topic might attract some ‘why’s’ when overlooked but since 2011 to 2018 literacy rate in India increased which is observed to be one of the role playing reasons of unequal ratio provided inclination towards one child policy.
• IMBALANCE OF GENDER– There’s a great number, of families who still seemingly provide higher status and respect to the male gender than females, considering them as ‘Burden’. The patriarchy of the society has stood rigid in the long run with spread of orthodox mentality and quick male dominance lastly creating an imbalance, of priorities and of killings in the womb.
• CHILD AND FORCED MARRIAGES– Marrying a girl child at the age when she cannot take stand for herself not only degrades her individual life status but affects the lives she introduces in the world. Lack of values to children born out of such Marriages with dominance of male partner ends up establishing a distorted situation for the upcoming generations.
SUGGESTIONS:
• INAUGRATING ETHICAL CHANGES– Awareness with regards to female literacy and independence can prospect the situation of equality where females can come out of the zone of dominance. Campaigns such as Beti bachao beti padhao fetched success in introducing such behavioural and value based changes to convert the radical mentality by fighting not the evil with hands but providing empowerment to the other side which holds the potential of enacting equality.
• LEGISLATIVE IMPLEMENTATION– The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 must be more strictly implemented to provide resources in curbing the gender prioritisation.
• AWARENESS INPUTS– The young minds as shaped foundationally can only change the generation. Input in the young Individuals with the importance of gender equality and health can act as a saviour for the situations.
