SHOULD WE HAVE RESERVATIONS FOR WOMEN

INTRODUCTION

The idea of reservation policies is not a new one. It has been raised from time to time by numerous specialised organisations that believe that by obtaining a reservation, they would be able to get representation for their class; nonetheless, it must be remembered that reservation and representation are two distinct phenomena. Many people misunderstand the idea of reservation and representation. Perhaps no country knows the challenge of the campaign to eradicate caste discrimination better than India, which has yet to successfully end the practise despite decades of democracy. Despite worldwide and domestic attempts to abolish caste prejudice, more than 165 million individuals in India alone continue to face discrimination and other forms of humiliating treatment as a result of their caste connections.

SITUATIONS IN MODERN INDIA

In modern India, the social structure is still defined as being fully based on the caste system. This caste system is founded not only on structural inequities between high and low caste untouchables, but also on social isolation and exclusion from participation in social, political, and economic activities and growth of society.

Women’s empowerment offers women the opportunity to make decisions, improves their ability to participate, improves their performance in their particular sectors, and aids in their growth. People believe that reservation is vital for women’s empowerment because it offers them the right to participate in policy decisions that benefit women and are developed with the help of women.

WHAT IS WOMEN RESERVATION BILL?

The Women’s Reservation Bill is a pending bill in the Indian Parliament that intends to amend the Indian Constitution to reserve 33 percent of seats in the lower house of parliament, Lok Sabha, and all state legislative assemblies for women.

The Women Reservation Bill, tabled by parliament in the 108th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2008, aims to reserve one-third of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women. The establishment of gender-based reservations has resulted in a considerably higher representation of women in many nations. This greater participation of women in politics is expected to draw local, national, and international attention to issues of violence against women and raise awareness of sexual harassment and mental trauma.

The Bill appears to be promising in its attempt to recognise the underlying complications within the category of women by acknowledging their distinct deprivation points resulting from caste disparities. Such a Bill would guarantee that their distinctive narratives, concerns, and mechanisms of oppression are articulated in the public discourse, which receives relatively little attention otherwise.

CURRENT SCENARIO OF THE BILL

The bill is now pending in the Lok Sabha, India’s Lower House of Parliament. The law will only be enacted if the ruling government fully supports it, since they have a majority in Lok Sabha.

Though there has been no big progress in the passage of the Women’s Reservation Law in recent months, if the current administration makes efforts to improve it, there is hope that the bill would be enacted in Lok Sabha shortly.

CONCLUSION

Women’s Empowerment requires equal involvement with males in authority and decision-making as part of their fundamental right to engage in political life, and for that goal, acknowledgment and representation are more important than reservation. Participation at the grass-roots level, such as in local electoral bodies, should be encouraged since it may boost their confidence and allow people to share their experiences.
