Siege Tactics still threaten Syrians : Post 10 years of war in Syria

“The rights experts of the United Nations have highlighted that the future of the people living in Syria is increasingly bleak. Different conflicts have escalated in specific war-ravaged areas which is a return to siege tactics linked to the plummeting economy”

Syria is not at all safe for the refugees to return after the war. This has been stated by the United Nations Commission of inquiry. There came an uptick in violence in the southwest, northeast, and northwest of the country and thereby the commissioners have highlighted the besiegement return by pro-government forces. Paul Pinhero who is the head of the commission of inquiry said that all the parties to the conflict continue to fight and perpetrate different war crimes and crimes against the people. This results in the infringement of the basic human rights of Syrians. It is very much difficult for the people in Syria to have a peaceful place to live or to find security. The war continues.

Al Hol’s Children: Scandal

There are many non-Syrian children whose parents are former IS fighters and they continue to stay in detention in dreadful conditions in the northeastern part of Syria. This condition has been described as “scandalous” by Professor Pinheiro. Many children are being refused to repatriate because of their home countries and thus they stay deprived of Liberty. This has been said by Pinhero to the Human Rights Council in Geneva which was the 48th session

The convention on the rights of children is the most ratified convention which is completely forgotten. The obligations of this convention are neglected and that is what is happening in camps and prison places. Over 40,000 children are held in camps which include Al Hol. Amongst them, some are Iraqi and some are from different countries.

Rising Forces: Bombardment

A siege has been condemned by the rights experts by pro-government forces. This happened in the place of Dar’a Al – Balad and “siege in tactics” in Quneitra. Hanny Megally who was the commissioner said that there has been a tragedy in Dar’a Al Balad which was documented in Eastern Ghouta three years after the suffering. This lasted for more than 5 years and the commissioners labeled them as barbaric and medieval previously. Over thousands of civilians were trapped inside Dar’a Al Balad and the danger was posed by heavy artillery shelling. The civilians trapped inside did not have access to food, water, and health care.

Fear amongst the people

The people lived in full fear and each and every day was full of fear to the civilians. They stayed in the fear of car bombs in Afrin and Ra’s Ayn regions of Aleppo. The car bombs are detonated very frequently in the areas where the civilians lived thus targeting the markets and busy streets.

According to the statistics and reports over 12 months, more than 243 men, women, and children have been killed in such attacks which is considerably higher.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northeastern part has also deteriorated and degraded and insecurity has been spread over the areas. These areas are subjected to increased attacks by extremist remnants with Turkish forces. Parts of Al Shifa hospital were also damaged and indiscriminate shelling continued.

What still remains is the division

No moves and efforts have been made to bring peace to the country, bring unity or seek reconciliation. The dangers which are faced by non-combatants continuously were highlighted by the inquiry commission. The areas in Syria where the government is back in control and the Syrians are facing hardships are resulting in protests by the Syrians. The Syrians are telling only one thing: “Continuous ten years of conflict, our lives are deteriorating and getting worse rather than getting better, when rather will we even see a better end to this or not?”
