How social media changed parenting for me

True. Change is the only thing that is constant. If we do not change ourselves with time, we would be left behind in the race for survival.

In the 2000’s or to be specific post 2010, social media slowly started playing a very important role in our lives. Something that was meant to bring the wold together and make it a Global Village was not providing employment and opportunities. True it is important that we all have now connected with people whom we thought we would not have.

One of the best things about social media is you can share anything and everything. If you are in doubt, different social media groups will provide you a platform to understand your queries from parenting, to relationships, to mental health to almost anything and everything under the Sun. Social Media has helped me a lot in firstly understanding what was post partum depression, when different women spoke about their experience post delivery and their mental health issues that followed. I felt that I was not alone. Social Media helped me understand that what I was undergoing was normal and talking about it was the solution and not shying about it or claiming to be perfect.

On one side you have parents, who may show that they are leading a perfect life. Simultaneously, we also have a set of parents, who openly accept their flaws. Being mothers, our society never leaves an opportunity to keep unrealistic expectations from us and to shame us for our every action. Simultaneously, I found strength and encouragement in the digital world, wherein strangers stepped in to boost my confidence.

I would have never thought about starting a second career or restarting my career in a different way unless my virtual world gave me encouragement. Apart from that I also learnt about modern day parenting products, problems and solutions via the virtual world. May it be proper use of diapers, cloth diapers, Baby Food Feeders, Baby Food and a lot of such things, which I was unaware of 5 years ago during my first son. Trust me parenting this time is much more easier than it was during the first time.

The best part about digital parenting is I felt that somebody had my back, without judging me, which I am pretty unsure would have been possible in my real life.

Yes, technology has changed parenting but it is also upon you on how you perceive it and go ahead and use the same to your benefit.

Do let me know, how social media has played an important role in parenting for you.
