SOCIAL MEDIA- HAS IT BECOME A BOON OR BANE

Technology has advanced to an extent where now everything has come into a man’s fingertips. With the advent of social networking sites like Facebook that had been a place to find old friends and make connections. Now it has become a platform where people can advertise and create a business empire altogether.

Now thanks to the year 2020, that bought in a lockdown all over the world, people have increased the time spent and usage of social media by multiple folds. Everyone is on social media for many reasons. It has become a platform for so many things like voicing opinion, giving updates about life and work, incubating businesses, sharing information, building relationships and so on.

Nowadays even children 9 to 10 years have a social media account that is dangerous. According to me their mind is creative and inquisitive that must be directed towards learning and exploring new things in a positive way. There are so many uncensored contents over the internet that they may access without the knowledge of the guardians. This gives them an exposure to the content that they are not matured to understand.

If we take the case of adolescents, probably everyone is busy updating about their recent happenings of or is trying out the latest trending challenge. Some of the challenges like the Blue Whale challenge or the dangerous selfies that one take to “impress” and get maximum likes is happening at the cost of their lives. It is a sad fact that many parent child relationships be at stake due to the sole reason of the child staying on long hours on mobile.

Adding onto the woes, social media has now become a medium where a person is targeted easily and mocked at trivial issues. Rumors flying on social media are very hard to control. Viral prank videos, trolls, roasts etc. are an example of this. The “Bois Locker room”  incident has bought out this major issue in front of the country. On top of that usage of foul language while commenting, abusing, being cyberstalked, and spammed by strangers are on a rampant increase now. The cyber laws in India are introduced and used to an extent but are still not at par to deal with and manage the cyber-crimes.

On the brighter side, social media has become a platform for artistes and many other people to showcase their talent and potential. There are so many legal tech startups that have bought a change in legal education and profession where one can consult and seek help from anywhere at any time. The short videos and posts have made learning easy, innovative, and fun. People have started businesses in the lockdown, and many have already become inspiring success stories. There are so many courses available that hardly take a month and you already have qualities to add feathers to your cap.

The biggest boon, I think we got during the covid crises was the information that was being passed about the supply of oxygen tankers and beds available during the second wave. The repositories and helplines being made available online have been a huge help for people in dire need. Encouraging talks and updates by the topmost doctors, pre and post covid care, precautions etc were reaching large masses of society mainly due to the social media.

So, I think what matters is how we choose to use an opportunity or thing at hand. Everything excess becomes an addiction, that can be hard to control. Social media used for the betterment of oneself and the society should always be encouraged but the notorious activities that take place using social media have to be strictly controlled, penalized and punished.
