The Impact of the Media on Social Penetration

Since the Internet’s inception, communication and information technology, including social media, has grown at a breakneck pace. As a result, social penetration has occurred, as well as self-disclosure in interpersonal interactions. The social penetration hypothesis investigates several aspects of interpersonal relationship formation. Altman and Taylor, two psychologists, proposed it in 1973. According to the social penetration theory, relationships get increasingly personal over time as partners reveal more and more about themselves.

In the process of self-disclosure, social media plays a crucial role. The professed social networking purpose of the social media, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, SnapChat, blogging, Duo, Imo, and others, is connected to self-revelation. A more powerful revealing of personal knowledge to another person is self-revelation. Personal experiences, thoughts, attitudes, feelings, beliefs, previous facts and life stories, and even future aspirations, thoughts, aspirations, and goals may be shared, as well as both high-risk and low-risk information.

Altman and Taylor feel that the most direct path to intimacy is to open one’s inner self to others. It is frequently referred to as the theory of personality, since it is modelled after a multi-layer onion, with the public self on the outside and the private self at the heart. This paradigm may be interpreted in a variety of ways, but the most basic one consists of six main levels. These include:

 1) biographical information (age, gender, and name) and

 2) clothing, food, and music preferences.

 3) Aspirations and goals

4) Personal religious beliefs

5) Long-standing worries and fantasies

6) The concept of one’s own identity.

As time passes and connection deepens, the layers of one’s personality begin to peel away, revealing the person’s core.

The progression of a relationship is not automatic, although it may be represented by distinct stages:

Stage 1: Orientation: At this stage one tells basic facts about oneself

Stage 2:  Affective stage of exploration (favourite foods, movies, books etc.)

Stage 3: Emotional interaction (Trip, plans, family news) in addition

Stage 4: Exchange stage that is stable (personal feeling and intimate details)

They play a vital role in social penetration. These are the key phases in the building of a healthy relationship based on self-disclosure. It may be evaluated by a cost and rewords analysis, which is further described by social exchange theory.

We look at the various advantages of self-disclosure and how it has benefited your life. Information availability, sharing context, self-clarification, self-validation, reciprocity, impression construction, connection maintenance, enhancement, and moral responsibility are all factors. However, self-disclosure may cause a variety of problems in your life, such as rejection, a poor impression, a decline in relationship pleasure, a loss of influence, a loss of control, and so on.

Nowadays, social penetration and self-disclosure result in a variety of offenses that have an impact on people’s personalities, offences like:

Harassment in the form of e-mail. [IT (Amendment) Act, 2008, Section 66A].

  • Section 354D of the IPC deals with cyber-stalking.
  • Dissemination of obscene material [Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code].
  • Defamation (Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code).
  • Hacking [Section 66 of the Information Technology Act]
  • Cheating and fraud [Section 416 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 66D of the Information Technology Act].
  • Sections 67, 67A, and 67B of the IT Act prohibit child pornography.
  • Privacy violation (Section 66E of the IT Act).

The media has a significant influence in this. The greatest line of protection against hostile social infiltration activity on social media is awareness campaigns, additional care, and monitoring.

These examples demonstrate how the media has made it easy to put a person’s private life into the public eye. Putting him at danger of invasion of his personal space and privacy, and changing the way we interact and form interpersonal relationships through social media. With the media, social infiltration and self-disclosure become simpler and faster.
