Sports is very important in our lives. Sports helps us build our physical stamina which in turn helps us be healthy in the long run. As we all know health is wealth. Any type of physical activity is good. Taking up a sport is a fun way to stay active and keep fit.
Sports have been part of humanity from the earliest chapters of history. The games played in Egypt and Mayan civilizations prove this. Football, hockey and rugby are followed as religions, whereas the athletic meets are always full of celebrations.
Now a days due to advancement in technology physical sports has taken a back seat. All the games and sports that used to be played in playgrounds and open spaces are being played on videos games, computers and smartphones. Play the games and sports on playgrounds felicitated physical activity and people enjoyed the games and sports in its real sense.
Another reason why people are hooked on to the virtual world is because there are no more open spaces and playgrounds to play games and sports. Especially in cities and urban area all the open spaces are being used to build buildings.
India is a home to many sports. India has a great tradition of sports, and is greatly influenced by the British presence in India in the 18th and 19th century. Cricket is undoubtedly the most popular sport, but in such a large and populous country there are many other sports that are played by a lot of people.
India also have been part of the Olympic Games since 1900 and winning an Olympic medal right off the bat when Norma Pritchard took two silver medals in athletics when in the 200-meter dash and the 200 meters hurdles. They skipped a few Games and returned in 1920 and have been sending athletes ever since.
India is one of the largest country in the world in both area and population. India is also one of the few countries that have retained the popularity of their indigenous games among its people. Games like Gilli Danda, kabaddi, pehlwani and kho kho. India is also where some of the oldest forms of martial arts originated like musti yuddha, kalarippayattu, silambam as well as marma adi. India also has a few board games, most popular of which is the chaturanga, believed to be the origin of modern chess. This is further reinforced with the rise of a number of chess grandmasters from the country.
Even though India has rich history in sports parents do not encourage their children to take up sports as a career. They usually prefer their children to take up other professions like being a doctor, lawyer or engineer. They consider sports as a less serious profession and therefore there are very few athletes in India.
But without any doubt there is change in scenario. People are now realizing the importance of sports. Parents are no longer afraid of their children having a career in sports. This is due to awareness efforts by the government and media. Initially sportsmen did not have enough funds to train and participate in various sporting events. Many a times people from poor families cannot afford to train in sports because of which they lose a chance to represent the country in tournaments Today the government is trying to give a boost to various forms of sports so that India and Indian players can shine in domain too.
Sports teaches us about sportsmanship which means fair and generous treatment to others. This is an important lesson to apply even in situations not related to sports. India has given the world many incredible sportspersons like Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza and many more. But this is not enough, India has more potential and needs to reach that by focusing more on this area and making training and places to train more accessible and sports friendly so that people do not hesitate to participate in games and sports. India needs to grow in sports as well along with developmental areas.
