This analysis is being done to analyse Indian Culture and understand the strengths and weaknesses encompassed under Indian Culture. In this article Indian Culture will be analysed through the context of the topics of Dance, Painting, Medicine, Ayurveda and Law and Order. The paper will thoroughly analyse how each these topics affected Indian Culture. It will shed light on what were the benefits and drawbacks of the mentioned topics. It will also explain what exactly was the threat to the factor affecting Indian culture.
Each of these factors played an important role in shaping Indian Culture to what it was today. Indian Culture is well known around the world for being one of the most diverse cultures. This is because of how the culture encompasses more than just one aspect. It has spread its roots into a number of aspects and has helped society grow as a whole. Indian Culture refers to the heritage of customs, ethical values, social norms, political systems, technologies, artifacts and belief systems etc. which originated in the different parts of the Indian sub-continent. This heritage is rich and dates back to several millennia ago.
Indian Culture is an amalgamation of various cultures. A major source of Indian Culture has been ancient Indian Scriptures and texts. These cultures have affected the life of an Indian to a great extent. Even in present times the way an individual in India goes about different activities or ventures is highly influenced by the Indian Culture.
Strengths:
Moving onto the analysis, first the benefits of the aforementioned factors/sub topics will be covered.
- Starting with the first topic that is dance. Dance in India just like different aspects of the culture have originated in different forms in different parts of India. These forms have further evolved into newer forms. Dance in India was generally classified as classical or folk. Both styles were well known for their uniqueness. One of the most important features of dance was that it gave a symbolic expression to religious ideas. This was the greatest strength of Dance and this expression of religious ideas enriched the Indian Culture.
- Moving into the second topic that is painting. Just like dance, Indian Painting has a rich and long past and different forms evolved in different parts of the country. The earliest examples of Indian Paintings were the rock paintings but many of them were lost due to climatic conditions. Indian paintings can be broadly classified as murals, miniatures and paintings on cloth. Indian art is filled with traditional history and devotional in nature. Its rareness and benefit are that it centres on Indian history, art, and religion. In order to understand and relate to Indian art, you must have information of its Indian religious status and the political history and these paintings are a good source of knowledge about the history and adds to the Indian Culture.
- For the third topic the presence of medicines in Indian Culture will be discussed. It is very well known that Traditional systems of medicines always play an important role in meeting global health care needs. India has six different distinctions of medical systems which are Ayurveda, Unani and Yoga, Naturopathy, Siddha and Homeopathy. The variety and distinctions in the medicinal system in India helped with treating a wide variety of diseases.
- The fourth topic is Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an alternative medicine system with its historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. In India, Ayurveda is considered not just as an ethnomedicine but also as a complete medical system that takes in to consideration physical, psychological, philosophical, ethical and spiritual well-being of mankind. It lays great importance on living in harmony with the Universe and harmony of nature and science. The central theoretical ideas of Ayurveda developed in mid-first millennium BCE. The main classical Ayurveda texts begin with accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the gods to sages, and then to human physicians. Ancient Ayurveda texts have been a valuable source of knowledge and gives an insight on how the Indian doctors used to go about their treatments since Ayurveda was a very well spread form of treatment.
- The final topic is Law and Order in India. Law and Order evolved from customary practices and religious texts to the well-defined codified set of laws and rules that exist in today’s time. Recorded history of law only begins in the Vedic period. The various stages of evolution of Indian Law is classified as that during the Vedic period, the Islamic period, the British period and post-independence. In a country as diverse as ours, every set of customs from each religion needs protection and the law and order that evolved over the years has helped protect these customs and in effect have been protecting our culture.
Weakness:
Now we will move into analysing what exactly were the demerits of the aforementioned topics in the section.
- In the previous section the benefits of Indian forms of dance were discussed and now we will move into what exactly are its demerits. India has eight different classical dance forms in which the traditions have been handed down from the teachers to their disciples, making the relationship between the relationship between guru and shishya an absolute one. This is a problem because there is an absolute surrender of will by the student to the guru. The student must respect his guru and is never allowed to complain instead it was enforced that the will of the guru was absolute.
- Moving onto the demerits of Indian paintings. These paintings are of historical importance mainly because they have been used as a major source of analysing different sectors of Indian history. But the possibility has never been considered that the opinion of the artist could have been highly opinionated. It is known that an artist bases his paintings on the basis of his interpretation of whatever the situation is and this makes the paintings highly biased and hence there is the possibility that the painting was not an accurate description and this reduces its historical significance greatly in terms of source of Indian History.
- Now we’ll look at the demerits of the medicines that prevail in India. Medicines are very important to human health and help treat a variety of diseases. The main issue is their availability. Medicines have the ability to cure but at the same time the same medicine can be used to harm. This is one of the biggest demerits of medicines. Especially in some points in our History itself poisons were made and served to a king in the form of medicine to kill him. Medicines are dangerous if used improperly and hence this poses a restriction to how easily it can be acquired and made use of.
- Ayurveda medicine seems so well thought of because it makes use of natural means and hence doesn’t seem to have any demerits but that is not the case. It has its own cons such as one being the slow treatment by Ayurveda. It takes a significant amount of time for the medicines to treat a disease as opposed to modern medicine. Though the fact that this form only uses natural means for treatment, this factor puts pressure on the environment which
- Law and order is meant to provide justice and is no way supposed to have a weakness but it is being handled by humans and no human is perfect hence it is bound to have imperfections. At many points laws have been framed that have not exactly been in the best interests of people. In many situations adequate laws and provisions have not been made to protect certain sects from persecution. This is highly detrimental to Indian society and its citizens who live here with the hope of protection being provided by the law.
