Structural Violence: Introduced in 1969 by Johan Galtung, structural violence refers to the form of violence wherein social structures or institutions may harm or otherwise disadvantage individuals by preventing them from meeting their basic needs. Structural inequalities are harmful to women due to the intersection of gender with existing conditions such as poor health, inadequate education, and healthcare. It has taken a toll on the physical, psychological, emotional, and economic life of a female.
Social Interventions that are effective in preventing or treating diseases such as HIV/AIDS or other infectious diseases:
- The social marketing of condoms is a good societal intervention that has been proven efficient in reducing HIV/AIDS. Condom social marketing seeks to increase the popularity of condoms using advertising and mass media. It increases access to condoms by making them widely available to the general public through community health facilities, promotional events, and other mechanisms. With the combined increase in condom advertising and availability, these campaigns promote the idea that condom use is healthy and enhances positive behavior. Thus, condom social marketing results in increased rates of community-level condom use, thereby benefitting the multiple goals of HIV and STD prevention.
- Giving classes about sex education and providing sufficient knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases and making people (especially women) understand the dangers of the diseases, will encourage them to implement ways of preventing them.
