STUDENTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

In this world of vast network and fast internet connection and technology, social media is said to the child, who continues the process. Social media is a computer-based, mostly internet based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social media is Internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content be it of any and every kind. It causes everything under our own finger tips within seconds. But with great facilities comes great responsibility, and how good we are handling it, is the real question.

Students today, have hand sets since the age of 13 to 14, or even early, making them prone and open to technology and social media, without even understanding, what comes with it. 40% of cyber crimes are committed by teenagers.

What are cyber crimes? What constitutes to be a cyber crime?
• Any crime/wrong related to cyber i.e., technology, social media, internet, computer, etc.
• Such as committing fraud, trafficking in child pornography and intellectual property, phishing scams, hacking, stealing identities, or violating privacy (violating laws and without the other person’s permit)
• The Information Technology act, 2000 is for the purpose to control and punish people who commit cyber crimes.

In the era of increasing technology and usage of internet almost everywhere, we have to be careful and here comes the role of social media. Social media is something that keeps us connected with the outer world and helps us creating connections throughout the world. Now knowing someone living 2000 miles away is on our fingertips. Be it for the purpose of any kind, example- tuition, connections, marriage, relationships, work, transactions, etc.

Now we can’t complain about this because it will furthermore and world with hard copy will soon end. Therefore to see the benefits of social media are many and thus making everything much easier and faster with less efforts. To help students, we need to make them knowledgeable about it, the benefits, the risks, the danger and how we can make world a better and safe place. We have to learn the ways to balance everything together. Practical life and online lives are different altogether therefore giving everything or making everything out of one is a dangerous task. Books, teachers, friends, knowledge, leisure, etc., everything is available. But creating a balance between reel and real life is the real challenge here.

Cyber world is a web, so we have decide we are getting stuck there or making and controlling it. Students are thriving and struggling, therefore to use it accordingly is important. And children are doing a great job but we have to look out for the crimes, even a small click or experiment can ruin someone and once something is on the web it can never be erased.
Therefore boon or bane you decide and choose accordingly.
