Sustainable development is defined as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The term “sustainable development” first appeared in the WCED’s report “Our Common Future” (also known as the Brundtland Report) in 1987. 

Sustainable development involves economic growth, environmental protection and social equity. Sustainable development is a way of developing societies in which the current generation enjoys development and progress without extinguishing resources so that the future generation can enjoy them too. 

Countries from all over the world have come together to tackle this issue. It will only be possible to address the issue of sustainable development if minds from all over the world get together and come up with an effective plan followed by effective implementation. 

In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. # Envision2030 

The seventeen sustainable development goals are, 

End poverty in all its forms everywhere 

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture 

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages 

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all 

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls 

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all 

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all 

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all 

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation 

Reduce inequality within and among countries 

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable 

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns 

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts* 

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development 

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss 

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels 

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development 

Sustainable development means finding a better way to do things. Usage of eco-friendly technology like electric vehicles instead of petrol and diesel cars can be carried out. Following the 3-R Approach (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), minimization of resource use, reusing poly bags or jute bags, instead of throwing them and recycling the materials goes a long way in achieving the goals of sustainability. The government and NGOs should also spread awareness and promote environmental education. 

Sustainable development not only means securing the environment for the future generations. It also means that we need to take actions that will improve the quality of the environment and the overall lifestyle of people.  

Summing it up, the economic development which we have achieved so far has adopted various techniques that proved to be harmful to the environment. The compelling need is for sustainable development which aims at the development of the society without having a negative impact on the environment. Even small actions have a huge impact on the whole outcome.
