On the shores of Somerton Beach, a corpse had been discovered. The guy was not taking any breaths. He was dressed in a beautiful suit, which was unusual for him since he was supposed to be in a formal setting. No one recognised him since he lacked any kind of identification.
He was not one of the individuals who had gone missing, as had been claimed. There was no way of knowing who he was, and the investigators merely speculated that he died of natural causes while walking along the beach’s edge. It has been more than 65 years since people have examined this corpse on several occasions, but no one has been able to find a solution to this mystery.
It was about 3:30 p.m. on a Sunday in 1948 when a married couple walked past the corpse of an elderly gentleman. They assumed he was just inebriated and so disregarded him and passed him by. There was another group of individuals who went by only a few minutes later, but they didn’t see him since they were busy talking among themselves. The next day, when the married couple returned to the beach for the second time, they discovered that it was the same guy laying in the same place as the day before. The married couple called 911 as soon as they became aware that anything was amiss with them.
The corpse was sent to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where it was thoroughly inspected. Several pieces of evidence were discovered in this man’s pocket, including: “an unused train ticket from Adelaide to Henley Beach, an unused bus ticket from Adelaide to Glenelg, a pack of Juicy Fruit chewing gum, some Bryant & May matches, an aluminium comb, and a pack of Army Club cigarettes containing seven cigarettes of another, more expensive brand called Kensitas,” according to police.
The autopsy performed the next day by the physicians revealed several interesting facts. Because this man’s foot was unusually twisted, the doctor predicted that he would often wear formal shoes, such as high heels on the job. In addition, his liver was enlarged, and his pupils were smaller than they should have been. Doctors unanimously anticipated that this guy had been poisoned, yet no toxic material was discovered in his body, which shocked both doctors and police officers alike.
Detective Sergeant Lionel Leane pursued the case with all he had at his disposal, although there were just a few good results. One of the things that this guy had with him included a completely illiterate letter. After attempting to decipher the meaning of this letter, detectives concluded that it meant “completed” or “ended.” What was the significance of this statement? What happened to this unfortunate, nameless guy that caused his death?
