Media plays a very important role in our democracy. It is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy. It is not only the voice of people but also at the same time acts as a means to promote the spirit of justice among people. Television , radio newspapers , magazines, etc. are some kinds of media. These mass media covers the wishes as well as aspirations of a large number of people. living in this world. Media tell us about different circumstances which our vibrant democracy is facing today.
The concept of media was emerged and become popular in 17th century . It came into limelight when printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg. Printing press acts as a tool to share information, knowledge, and ideas among people. In India’s struggle for independence print media provokes the strong sense of revolution against the rude British regime. India’s first print media newspaper was Bengal Gazette , and several other newspapers aware people about their rights and duties. After independence, media had gained a lot of laurels for society. It is controlled by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting . and also by Press Council of India. The courses on Mass Media and Communication is one of the top prioritized courses among Indian students. It welcomes new areas of employment for youths keeps the spirit of democratic federalism alive. The Supreme Court and other subordinate courts get some ideas about pronouncing its judgement on the basis of media reports.
However, media had faced obstacle in 1975 when emergency was imposed by the Government of India. The media was censored , and it began to loose its charm for a while . People from national community condemn this censorship of press. Censorship of press or ban in media is simply signifies the murder of the voice of the people. It should not be done at any cost. In present context, the TRP scam and the case on a well known anchor Arnab Goshwami, pollutes the beautiful picture of media. But it does not mean all forms of media are irrelevant. The only thing is that people along with government must take some robust measure to restore the value of media.
In spite of facing wide varieties of challenges, media has strongly reflects the opinion of people to government and from government to various other people. Media inculcates the habit of writing ,speaking and reading in public domain. The digital media widens the scope of knowledge. Hence, we can say that media is an integral part of our life.
