WHAT IS LAW ?
A law is a set of rules developed by the government for administrating justice in the state. The law is controlled and enforced by the controlling authority.
Laws are those rule of conduct that control courts of justice in exercise of their jurisdiction. As distinguished from all rules of conduct that obtain more or less general recognition in a community of men, they are such as have for their enforcement the entire power of the state.

PURPOSE OF LAW
Law provides information to the citizens in various ways. For example Indian Penal Code provides information regarding the crimes and its punishment, Contract Law provides information that how contract is formed between the parties, Consumer Protection Act provides information regarding the rights and duties of the consumer. Partnership Act says that how people can come into partnership business to earn profit and also helps them to know their duties towards the firm.
Thus, this provide the government to run the state effectively and also serve the purpose of establishing standards, resolving disputes, protecting liberties etc.
CLASSIFICATION OF LAWS
Following are the types of laws –
- PRIVATE LAWS – Private laws are the law that deals with the relationship between the individuals that are of no direct concern to the state. This include law of contract, la of tort, family law etc.
- PUBLIC LAW – Public laws are the laws that determine the relation of citizen to the state. This include criminal law, tax law, administrative law.
- CONSTITUTIONAL LAWS – This laws are all those rules which directly or indirectly affect the exercise of power in the state. This defines the role, powers and structure of different entities within the state.
- STATUTE LAW – Statute laws are framed by the legislative assembly or by the parliament. It is the highest type of law which passes acts onto the House of Parliament where they debate whether the act should exist or not.
- ORDINANCE – Ordinance are the orders issued by the executive branch of the government within the power prescribed to them by the law of state.
- COMMON LAWS – It is a body of unwritten laws based on the legal precedents established by the courts.
- ADMINISTRATIVE LAWS – This law administer the actions of the government
- INTERNATIONAL LAWS – International laws are rules which determine the conduct of the general body of civilized state in their dealing with each other. Some of the examples of International laws are – Laws of wars, refugee law, international criminal law, international human rights law.
SOURCES OF LAWS
- CUSTOMS – Customs plays an vital role in framing the laws, because of their historic value. This has been characterized by different legal advisers according to their idea, theories, views and belief.
- RELIGION – This promote ethical, law abiding behavior in their adherents. Religious adherents strive to obey the law and respect the authority of the state,
- JUDICIAL DECISION – Judicial decisions are formally only deemed to interpret the existing law and are not a binding source of law.
- EQUITY – Equity prevails over common law, but its application is discretionary. Its main achievement are trust, probate and equitable remedies.
