When I learnt Public Speaking from Dr. Shashi Tharoor

I first came to know about this charismatic Orator, when I was in my second year of Bachelors of Mass Media. He was contesting for the position of UN Secretary General. I was mesmerized by hi speech and used to regularly listen to him.

It was only recently that I started observing him minutely for his Public Speaking skills. He is immensely clear with his thought process, well prepared, fearless, knows his choice of words and the best part is he is unapologetically himself. Many a times I have seen him openly carry a note for reference and he very casually in front of the large audience refers to them. I used to follow him and respect him as a good orator, but my respect for him as a Human Being Increased manifold, when I saw heard his speech at the Oxford Debate Club.

No matter what political party he belongs to, but when it comes to facts and application of the same, for the development of the society. That is what sets him class apart from the others. He does is very vocal about the same. He is a man, who is proud to be an Indian and makes us feel proud about our heritage.

One of the best thing about Dr. Tharoor’s speeches are that he looks very comfortable while delivering the same. It is like he is having a casual conversation about the topic with you over a cup of coffee. He does not force his opinions, but he somehow convinces you to think about the subject. His content is always well researched and the way he speaks purely reflects his years of experience.

His Ted Talk about the Indian Education System addressed the genuine problems and solution in our education system. He did not blow it out of proportion or play the blame game on different parties, instead he spoke about how we could utilize our huge population for the welfare of our Country and also contribute to the World, provided we give them proper education which they need.

Hereunder are a few things that I learnt about Public Speaking by observing him:

  1. Calling a Spade a Spade Unapologetically
  2. Read well, because ultimately only knowledge will save you in the end.
  3. It is ok to take support of small notes, not everyone perfectly remembers their facts, while delivering their speech.
  4. Enjoy your time on stage, He looks so happy and content when he is talking to the World at large on the stage.
  5. Be Confident, only Facts will give you confidence.

I also loved him on One Mic Stand on Amazon Prime, wherein he presented his first Act of Stand Up Comedy. A man of his stature has too much to loose. A Politician is someone who is supposed to be serious, focused, boring and always fighting, yet here he was trying to do something new and he nailed it. The risk of experimenting with something new and moving out of your comfort zone is something that people like us should try atleast once in our lifetimes.
