WHY I DECIDED TO PURSUE LAW

The Study of Law is useful in a variety of points of view. It qualifies a man to be useful to himself, to his neighbors, and to the public

Thomas Jefferson

The subject of Law fascinates me a lot. I am intrigued by the developments in legal services and how it adapts to an ever-changing society. The feature of legal services that appeals to me a lot is the dynamic nature of this subject because it is connected to every field in the market may it be politics and may it be cybersecurity, everything revolves around it.

Not only this but ever since I remember history, politics & recent developments in the country and the world have been a part of my family’s breakfast talk. My family’s inclination towards world affairs and the freedom to put forth their opinions about an issue both at home and in society also became a major reason for me to enter this field. In my opinion, the Rule of Law is the most effective long-term antidote to the pressing problems of the world.

I would also like to throw some light on why I chose law over other professional careers such as medical, engineering, in my view law not only provides me with a plethora of opportunities but also gives me a sense of being an enlightened citizen of my country. I think the times have gone by when only a career in medicine/engineering was considered a good career option after completing school. The field of law has emerged as a great profession and has proved to be an equally noble career when compared to the medical/engineering line.

CAREER OPTIONS AFTER LAW

I believe that a career in law is a rewarding experience both in terms of financial benefits and the sense of fulfillment in helping the countrymen, by enlightening them about their basic fundamental rights and duties laid down in our laws. I am also of the view that a career in law in India, is not just about representing clients in courts or tribunals but it has a wider scope. The various career paths one can follow after pursuing law are as under:

CORPORATE LAWYER

With the advent of Globalization and growing start-ups there arose a dire need for Corporate Lawyers who could legally aid these start-ups as well as Multi National Companies. Corporate Lawyers cater to tasks involving legal drafting and policy-making. Along with this many small law firms also tend to expand their geographical reach to capture more areas of law such as finance, taxing, and competition which come under the expertise of a corporate lawyer.

JUDICIAL SERVICES

We all know who a judge is and what are his/her functions, but many people are unaware of the process of appointment of judges. In India, many states conduct an entrance exam through which any individual who has completed his LLB/LLM has the opportunity to become a judicial magistrate. The minimum & maximum age required to appear for these exams is 21 and 32 respectively. Judicial Services in India exam is conducted in three phases which are Prelims, Mains, and Interview.

PUBLIC PROSECUTOR

In simple words, a public prosecutor is a person who acts as an agent of the state and represents the interests of common people in the criminal justice system. The position of the public prosecutor has also been defined under Sec 24 of Cr.P.C. If one has to pursue the profession of Public Prosecutor, he/she has to uphold a basic principle of rule of law which is embodied in one of the legal maxims i.e., Audi alteram partem (no person shall be condemned unheard).

BANKING & INSURANCE SECTOR

As I previously stated that law as a dynamic field has touched every sphere of the market, banking as a sector has also not remained untouched by law. Generally, this sector consists of independent legal departments with posts such as Administrative Officer (Law) or Specialist Officer (Law). For the above-mentioned posts and many more, Banks and Companies have formulated exams for careers with them. In these exams, the novice candidates are also welcomed and are required to secure good merit and pass an interview to get selected for the desired position.

PARALEGALS

The Paralegals act as supporting agents in a private or a public law firm and assist the attorneys in their legal work. The role a paralegal play is very different from secretary because the activities a paralegal performs involve the preparation of meetings, hearings, trials, and communication with the clients.

The field of law is said to have a lot of scope and it has many areas; I personally think an individual can also build a successful career in law with the areas mentioned below:

  • Law Firm Administrator
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Patent Attorney
  • Immigration Assistant
  • Company Secretary
  • Mediator
  • Trade Mark Attorney

SKILL-SET REQUIRED FOR LAW

I also think that I have the qualities that this field requires me to have such as good communication skills, critical and analytical skills, reasoning skills, reading comprehension skills, and quantitative skills. Also, I would like to highlight the fact that as the field of law is growing continuously these basic skills become a necessity in the life of an individual who is determined to pursue law as a career. The skill that is of the utmost importance in all of these skills is, reading comprehension because the roots of law lie in reading it, and comprehending it meaningfully. In my view this is the reason why undergraduate law exams such as CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) and AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) make questions which can only be answered if a person has acquired all the above-mentioned skills, to give the students a taste of how a lawyer thinks and processes a certain amount of information.

MY FUTURE AMBITIONS

Ambitions are created by the fusion of interest and aptitude, As I am currently in my 1st year of law school, I currently have many goals and ambitions in my legal career. I have a keen interest in the field of Litigation & Constitutional Law but I am still learning the intricacies of these fields through internships, certificate courses & am actively involved in grabbing all the opportunities provided by my college. My ultimate goal is that of a career where I will not be shunned for expressing my views, where my life will not be bound by the walls of my cubicle but a job that will allow me to learn something new every day and push me to do better for the society to which I owe my existence.
