It’s a common notion that a woman completes a man and vice versa. India had been a country that has seen the evolution of women from being the caretaker of the family to the breadwinner of the same. In every chapter of the evolution of this country there have been women who have changed the course of history and left their mark in their time. First War of Independence saw the rise of a 23 year old woman who defied foreign authority on her land, Rani Lakshmibai or the Queen of Jhansi. Then during the War od Independence we saw the rise of Captain Lakshmi Sehgal who inspired and mobilized young girls and women to fight for freedom. In modern times, women like Arundhati Bhattacharya, Indira Nooyi, Sudha Murthy have set a mark in their respective fields.
One thought that crossed my mind while writing this is when we have so many idols to look upto and inspire us then why does women in our society still live-in fear and be oppressed. Oppression does not just mean physical but also of the mind. Women are not allowed to express their thoughts, voice their opinion or contribute into the important matters of the family. Recent surveys have very well highlighted the gap of financial awareness in women than men. This is prevalent even among the educated class. It is often seen that the woman is dependent on men of the house, may it be husband, father, or brother when it comes to the financial decisions.
Considering the rural areas and villages of the country, women are still seen equivalent to the domestic helps of the house and baby producing machines. Girls are encouraged to stop their education at an early age and contribute into the working of the house. They cannot even step out of their houses after sunset. Basic sanitary provisions are considered a luxury and maybe is a dream for a lot of women.
Women are commonly seen has the most vulnerable sections of the society. Any catastrophe happens, the woman become a direct or indirect victims of the same. Example in the ongoing crisis of Taliban in Afghanistan, it is the women who are suffering. Teenage girls, widows and unmarried women are being asked to be “donated” to the warriors so they can marry and serve them. The reason I bought up this situation is because it is in the global media. There are innumerable cases that go unreported due to various reasons.
Something that is very common and is reported mostly everywhere in the world and the country the harassment (both physical and mental) faced by them. Majority of the women face this at various place like workplace, home, public spaces etc. and at different stages of life. They get reported and the culprits are punished but most of the time they go unreported due to the fear of the society. The after effects and trauma that women go through after the incident for the entire life is heart wrenching. They are mostly ostracized by the family and society as well.
I sincerely wish that women are more respected in various fields. Some of us are really privileged to be safe and sound but there are many people out there who are extremely vulnerable. We, as social beings should work and support each other in all right things and be ready to correct and point out the mistakes. One should also be ready to accept and rectify their mistakes. Rather than downgrading and trolling other women, we should work in the path to uplift them.
