WOMEN AND SOCIETY- PART 2

Women have been an integral part of the society but it has been seen that they are lacking in many spheres of life. Many are successful are many are not. Some have the privilege to voice their opinion, and some cannot ever find their voice. Some dare to live by their rules and some get bashed for doing the same. As a young woman and youth of the country, I think there are some essentials that a woman should always possess.

Firstly, a girl should have the basic education- a matriculation or higher secondary level compulsorily. This will not only give the woman a base but also keep her away from the institution of child labor to an extent. She should be able to understand and make basic decisions. Education is the first step towards becoming self-reliant, have a greater analytical, logical and situational thinking.

Further, she should be supported by the family as much as possible. Commonly referred to as “Parayi Dhan” or someone who must settle in her husband’s house, take care of that house etc., should not be a primary goal of a woman. According to me family is the basic unit in a civilized society and all the values and ideologies being passed down to the future generations also arise from here. Apart from that each member of the family derives his/ her strength from the support of the family. So, this can be considered as a heartfelt request from me that parents support their daughters, brothers support their sisters and a husband support their wife in all good tasks they wish to do for the upliftment and well-being of themselves and the family.

Then women should learn self defense from a young age. Not everywhere it is possible that you may call for help and someone may protect you. Girls should be made aware and taught the difference between good and bad touch and made aware of the importance to share any untoward incident to the parents or guardians. Due to the wake of many untoward happenings towards females, it should be mandatory for schools to keep self-defense as a subject or in case of workplaces and other areas, they can organize workshops and camps for the same. Women should be aware regarding laws relevant and necessary for them and also the procedures so that they can help themselves and others in need.

Some necessities like sanitary napkins, tampons and such products should not be a luxury but a basic amenity. Government should decrease the taxes or rather make them tax free. It should be made available even to the most remote part of the country. Importance of menstrual hygiene, general awareness and the disorders regarding them should be made important as nowadays many females do go through a lot of stress that makes them a prey of lifestyle disorders. Periods being a taboo in society should be thrown off far. Many corporates now have begun giving period leaves along with the maternity leaves and I think this is a significant step towards the change.

Lastly, women should realize the importance of financial independence. It does not mean being spendthrift as such, but she should know about various financial functions like savings, investments, trading etc. She should learn to handle money and make financial decisions. It is commonly seen that women look up to the men when it comes to financial matters, filing income tax returns, shares, investments etc. it is high time that this attitude changes and financial and monetary awareness is asserted.

All these are just the tip of the iceberg. There are still lot of issues and lots of solutions coming up. As earlier said that women are an integral part of the society, now I feel that it is time that young girls and women learn to take up space and voice in the society. We should be allowed to voice the concerns and find ways to negate it.
