To change the conditions of women in the society the main cause is to change the thought process of society. Till the thought process of society will not change, the conditions of women also will not change. The society has to understand that nation is from she and not from he. Practices such as female infanticide, dowry, child marriage and the taboo on widow remarriage, have has a long duration in india, and have proved difficult to root out, especially in caste Hindu society in northern India.

The constitution of India guarantees to all Indian women equality ( article 14), no discrimination by the state (article 15(1), equality of opportunity (article 16), equal pay for equal work(article 39(d)) and article 42. The government of india declared 2001 as the year of women’s empowerment (swashakti). The national year for the policy foe the empowerment of women came was passed in 2001. In the 1990s, grants from foreign donor agencies enables the formation of new women oriented NGOs. Self help and groups and NGOs such as self employed women’s association have played a major role in the advancement of women’s rights in india.
