The word empowerment means enabling one to gain control over one’s life and claiming one’s right. Women empowerment is the movement that ensures the participation of women in the social, economic, and political sphere. It is the upliftment of the female gender. Earlier, women were sidelined, they were nonexistent in society. But time, women began to be aware of their rights. Hence, the revolution of women began against discrimination of sex and gender.
Except for a few countries, mainly in the west, women are treated as inferior and they are forced to play second fiddle to men in the rest of the world. In our society, women were taught to function as per the needs of men. They were trained to make the life of men easier. They were always preached to be disciplined, sacrificing, and dependent. Due to these girls grow up believing that they are inferior to men. In the same country where women are treated as goddesses’, female infanticide, feticide, and sexual abuse against women are reported widely. In this case, women empowerment has helped women globally to pursue their dreams and choose their career.
Despite the efforts made in women empowerment, it is still under patriarchal suppression. Everyone should be taught that no sex is superior. Women should also get the same freedom enjoyed by men, no one deserves suppression or violence for being themselves. Women’s empowerment should begin in every home. Young boys should be taught to respect women. They should be taught the necessity of consent rather than violence.
Women can gain power in a variety of ways. It can be done through government programs or on a one-on-one basis. On a personal level, we should begin to appreciate women and provide them with chances equal to males. There should be programmes to promote and encourage women to pursue jobs, further education, and entrepreneurial endeavours, among other things. There has been some initiative among the government for the same. Some of them include programmes such as the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, Mahila-E-Haat, Mahila Shakti Kendra, Working Women Hostel, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and others. Eradicating certain ancient practices like child marriage can bring one step closer to the women empowerment. A similar practice that should be subjected to immediate halt is dowry system. These tiny actions will make a difference in the wretched condition.
The stigma and embarrassment associated with divorce women must, without a doubt, be eliminated from society. Under the roof of culture, many women have to suffer violent relationships in silence. Even if their girls are mistreated by their own family, parents preach daughters that it is immoral and girls are supposed to tolerate abuse from anybody. Parents are ready for a dead daughter as compared to a divorced one. They are trained to be a second citizen to men at the very time of their birth.
I would like to end with the powerful words of Steve Maraboli, “The empowered woman is powerful beyond measure and beautiful beyond description”.
