WIPO, or the World Intellectual Property Organization, was founded on July 14, 1967, and is located in Geneva, Switzerland. This article will examine the history of WIPO, how it evolved into what it is now, what WIPO’s missions, functions, and goals are, and how it works to improve intellectual property rights throughout the globe.The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a United Nations specialised agency based in Geneva, Switzerland.
WIPO’s objective is to drive the development of an international intellectual property (IP) system that promotes innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. WIPO, which was established by the WIPO Convention in 1967, now has 193 member states and serves as a worldwide policy platform for governments, multilateral organisations, business groups, and civil society to address changing intellectual property concerns. WIPO member countries and observers meet on a regular basis in a number of standing committees and working groups. Members of these committees negotiate the revisions and new regulations required to guarantee that the worldwide IP system keeps up with the changing world and continues to fulfil its purpose.
WIPO is a unique organisation among UN organisations in that its operations are mostly self-funded. According to WIPO’s Program and Budget for 2020-2021, the estimated income for the biennium is approximately 880 million Swiss francs, while the expected expenditure is 768 million Swiss francs. WIPO anticipates that payments for services will account for roughly 95 percent of total revenue.
The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is the oldest organisation in the field of intellectual property protection. In fact, it was established at a diplomatic convention in 1893.
POSITION OF INDIA
India is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization, a United Nations specialised body in the field of intellectual property. In 2005, the Department of Higher Education shifted WIPO-related nodal functions to this Department.
WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY INDICATOR
According to WIPO data, China dominated the charts in 2018. Of the total patent applications submitted globally in 2018 (3,326,300), 1,542,002 were filed in China, accounting for 46.4 percent of the total, an 11.6 percent increase over the previous year. Not only for patent applications, but also in other fields, China demonstrates absolute dominance by a large number, such as in Utility Models, where China has a 96.6 percent share of the world, Trademarks, where China has a 51.4 percent share, Industrial Designs, where China has a 54 percent share, and Plant Varieties, where China has a 28.5 percent share. With each passing year, the number of applications filed in all of these categories increases significantly.
CONCLUSION
WIPO, from its inception in 1883 with the Paris Convention to the current shape and structure in which it is known to the public, demonstrates the evolution and required modifications that were done to arrive at this position. From a notion to deal with intellectual property concerns to being a worldwide flag bearer for gender equality, it demonstrates the expansion of an organisation, and this growth has a lot to do with the fact that it became a part of the United Nations in 1974.
