A research report is the detailed description of the entire research work. The researcher has to present the research findings in the form of a report conveying the whole result of the study in sufficient details.
Much of the report writing depends upon the topic, extent of the materials techniques, insight and imagination of the researcher. The exposition should be simple clear precise, appropriate and accurate with logical, unbiased presentation of facts and results. The expression shall be in ideal language and pleasing style. There shall not be any ambiguity, inconsistency or omission.
The report shall be arranged in distinct parts, chapters, headings, sub headings and paragraphs according to the contexts and contents. Foot notes should be given for references to quotations, citations and clarifications.
The report shall consist of the following contents:-
(1) Title
The title should be clear and suggestive of the entire contents.
(2) Introduction
The introduction of the report is to introduce in detail the importance of the study of the problem with reference to its historical background, present importance and future utility, both theoretical and practical in all socio-legal aspects. The introductory chapter should explain why the problem is worth investigating, disclosing its nature, rationale and scope. It shall state the sources of informations, review of literature materials used and the methodology adopted. The introduction shall also include the scheme of the report indicating the subject-matter dealt with in the different chapters.
(3) Definition of concepts
The report shall contain the definition of concepts, operational definitions and their relations among each other in proper sequence.
(4) Hypothesis
The report shall contain a statement of the working hypothesis which guided the research and the formulation of new hypothesis with their testing.
(5) Descriptions of techniques adopted
The report shall give a brief description of the various techniques adopted in the research showing the reasons for adopting the same. This includes the type sources, manner and conditions of various observations, schedules, case history data, sampling procedure, statistical procedure, scaling techniques etc. and the experimental treatment Schedules, plans, charts, diagrams, graphs, and tables shall be properly appended at the appropriate contexts with numbered references indicating their sources.
The report should agree with the plan or the project proposal, Difficulties and problems in collecting, analysing and interpreting data, and discrepancies if any in the data are also to be given in the report. The report should give suggestions to remedy the discrepancies if any, and to solve the problems.
(6) Results
The results of the research shall be given with systematic presentation of the finding, reasons for the findings and the conclusions thereon. It shall also state the evidences relevant to the research, which are not in conformity with the hypothesis. The researcher has to proceed with the dictates of his findings and interpret the data even if it goes against his views. He should present all the questions and findings even if the results are negative or inconclusive to the hypothesis.
(7) Conclusion
The conclusion shall contain a summary or abstract containing a brief statement of the entire report.
The researcher may point out and discuss the limitations if any, experienced by him during the study.
During the course of research, there may be the development of new problems, hypothesis and relationships. All the relevant and new questions raised by the study should be adequately explained providing suggestions for further research.
The report should explain the utility of the study with reference to the implication of the theory, practice and policy extending to the different categories, as societies,
administrators,
authorities etc.
(8) Appendix and Bibliography
At the end of the report, necessary appendices showing sample questionnaires, sample interviews, transcription sheets etc. should be given. There must also be a bibliography showing the list of references used.
